Spring Program

With Sacramento Bee Newspaper In Education Program

Water conservation doesn't have to be a dry subject

Water. It's one of our state's most precious and valuable natural resources. Today's young people are the key to conserving and maintaining our water supply for tomorrow. That's why I invite you to participate in a FREE program this May 2006 designed to teach students in grades K-8 about using water efficiently.

Be Water Smart, presented by the Regional Water Authority and The Sacramento Bee's Newspapers in Education (NIE) program, teaches kids to practice water efficiency in every-day activities. Students learn where water comes from and ecology through math, science and the arts, fun puzzles, investigative work and activities. This Be Water Smart program is newly updated from NIE's former Be Water Wise program.

Enrollment in Be Water Smart includes:

A newspaper-style student supplement called "Water." The supplement is written by an award-winning environmental educator and includes fun activities and illustrations. It tells the never-ending story of the water cycle.
An updated Be Water Smart teacher's guide with a regional focus and lessons based on California Content Standards.
An NIE subscription to The Sacramento Bee, including a class set of newspapers delivered to your school on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning May 2nd (to coincide with Water Awareness Month in May).
An opportunity for students to win prizes by participating in a contest designed to reinforce water saving practices at home. Prizes include T-shirts and cash awards.
A colorful "California Waterways Map" provided by the California Department of Water Resources.
A "Mr. Leaky" water conservation activity book for grades K-4.

The Program is Free!
There is no cost to participate in this program because the Regional Water Authority sponsors your enrollment. Once you have enrolled, each teacher will receive a confirmation email with a web site link to the full "Be Water Smart" Teacher's Guide for either Grades K-4 or Grades 5-8 to assist with early lesson planning.

Sign-up Soon!
For more information about the program, including online registration or to review sample activity pages from the "Be Water Smart" Teachers Guide, please visit Sacramento Bee NIE after March 30, 2007. With the Sacramento Storm Water Quality Partnership (with South Yuba River Citizens League)

The Great Water Mystery

Someone has to teach us a lesson about being the efficient users and protecting our water resources-but who? Enter Detective Drizzle, a pun-talkin', water stalkin' detective, complete with a trench coat, fedora, and a flood of watery information. For the past three years, Detective Drizzle has been charming elementary and middle school students (and their teachers!) with a fabulous school assembly called "The Great Water Mystery."

"The Great Water Mystery" uses hilarious audience participation-including turning two students into a working model of a watershed-dramatic slides, and exciting demonstrations to inspire students about protecting and conserving our precious water resources. Thanks to sponsorship from the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership and Regional Water Authority's 14 participating water agencies, Detective Drizzle's visits are free to 15,000 students in Sacramento and Placer Counties this fall.

Call Molly Hucklebridge at (530) 265-5961 extension 204, or send an email to molly@syrcl.org . Please include your name, your school’s name, a contact phone number, and the number of interested classrooms in each grade level.

"The Great Water Mystery," which was designed and produced by a non-profit organization known as the South Yuba River Citizens League or SYRCL, has blossomed into a multi-county program that is meeting state requirements for many water agencies. By this December, Detective Drizzle will have reached over 46,000 school children.
